ATSUYO ET AKiKO - THE UNiTY PROJECT
The story behind the female unity project
We recently moved our studio into a new space in the Brooklyn Navy yard. We share that collective space with TRACEY TANNER, who has a line of hand made leather goods, and THE GREAT LAKES GOODS, who has a line of hand made objects and home goods. As we started to get settled into our new home we got see how and with what they both work. We saw Tracey’s beautiful leather scraps and wanted to make something out of those. The Great Lake Goods’ playful objects and shapes helped inspire us for our new collection.
While we began to daydream our unity project our next door friend and brand ILANA KOHN, who is a Brooklyn based clothing designer, told us they had leftover linen that we could use if we wanted to. Her beautiful linen was turned into ATSUYO ET AKiKO’s new collection of Jumpsuits and Double Handled Bag!! Both the jumpsuits and bags come with shaped patches from Tracey’s Leather & The Great Lake Goods' shapes that you can add on to make it more unique. And that's how the female unity project came to life - a group of female owned business all working together to help each other out.
We are excited about this project for a few reasons.
- It gives us the opportunity to work together as a group with all of us contributing things that make our individual brands unique
-We're getting the chance to use leftover materials to make something new
- Most importantly we're getting to support other female owned businesses.
This is just the beginning of the female unity project and we can't wait to see what happens next!
